Nocturne
About Nocturne
Nocturne is a collaborative work that explores the rhythmic encounters between camera, sound, and a body in motion. ( 13 min dur.)

Embraced by sound and obscured by a sense of infinite darkness, the form of the dancer’s body slowly becomes visible as she begins to move closer to the edges of the light. Absorbed by the physicality of her movements, she is gradually illuminated in warmth as she teeter’s at the borders of our worlds.
Journeying within the rich, textural depths of the sound pulsing within the darkness, we are navigated through the dimensions of the nocturnal space she inhabits. Tension accelerates as the rhythmic traction propels her ever closer to the boundaries of our converging worlds, in this highly-charged, visceral study.
Creative Process
The content for the film was created as a collaborative practice. Electro-acoustic composer Simon Atkinson played several of his compositions in the studio to which Kerry Francksen (choreographer/performer) and Laura McGregor (camera/edit) improvised. From this practice excerpts of Atkinson’s sound and Francksen’s choreography were edited by McGregor (with permission) into the final film. The excerpts of Atkinson’s compositions included are from three of his pieces: Interiorities, Modulation & Nocturne, the latter giving the film its name.
